Which of the new words do you already know?  Which words sound familiar to you? Can you think of a situation where you may have heard the word used?

Read the short essay that uses each of the new words. Write a synonym for each word that would make the most sense in the context of the sentence.

Determination is a positive personal character trait that will serve as an example to others. A person with determination is someone who is earnest, unwavering or dogmatic in his or her purpose. If there is something this person wants to do, he or she will not give up easily or be deterred by something else. If you are determined to achieve a worthwhile goal, you will reap the rewards.

However, some people capitulate or give up too easily. A person may have a goal to do something, but then the task seems more arduous than he or she thought it would be. The person then weighs the desire to achieve the goal versus the work required and decides to quit. For example, a young man may want to get a job as an electrician. But then he finds that he must take classes and go through a two-year apprenticeship. To him, that is too formidable a task. Instead, he continues working at McDonald's, which is the antithesis of his true goal.

Another situation might be if a person does not have confidence in her ability to complete the task. For example, suppose a girl wanted to get into the school play. She dreams of having the lead role, but then when audition time comes, she may feel ambiguous about her talent, so rather than going through a belittling experience she capitulates and backs out at the last moment.

Whatever we want to attain, we must let go of those debilitating thoughts that prevent us from obtaining our goals and dreams. Every goal requires sacrifices of some sort. Old habits of thinking and behaving negatively can only deter us from achieving our utmost desires and goals. So don’t be afraid to articulate your dreams- tell your friends what you want and then with determination go after your goals. Others will emulate you because you will be a positive role model!
