A Foreshadow of Things to Come

4Composition

Students will express their ideas and experiences by producing written, oral and visual texts, applying standard conventions.

Students will write several essays throughout the year and a research paper.

Topics:

@ What is Good Writing?

@ Writing Process

@ 6 + 1 Traits of Good Writing

@ Research Paper

All written assignments will be assessed using a writing rubric based on the 6 traits of effective writing.

&Literature

Students will read, comprehend, respond, interpret, analyze and evaluate a wide range of print and nonprint literary, informational and persuasive texts in multimedia formats. 

 

Students will read nonfiction, short stories, novels, poetry and a play. They will also be expected to read an independent novel each month and complete a project.

 

Students will be expected maintain a journal where they will explore their thoughts before, during and after reading.

 

Students will be assessed through written assignments, projects, oral presentations, group activities, quizzes and tests.

 

!Vocabulary

Students will acquire new vocabulary and use it correctly in reading and writing.

 

Each Friday students will be given a new list of vocabulary words to learn. There will be a weekly vocabulary quiz each Wednesday.

 

Students are expected to learn and use the new words in their speaking and writing. Bonus points will be awarded when students correctly incorporate new vocabulary words into a written assignment.

 

Students can also earn additional bonus points on their weekly vocabulary quiz by bringing in real world examples of the words being used.
